There is a mitzvah for everyone to get up and go to Yerushalayim three times a
year. But what will happen to their land and homes if they do so? Won’t other
nations or thieves come and take everything they have? Ibn Ezra says there is no
doubt that Hashem will guard their land from all enemies because Bnei Yisrael
will be doing the 'רצוֹן ה.
ְ In fact, Hashem will put so much fear in the hearts of the
neighbors that they will have no desire to take your land while you are gone, even
if they think they want to start a war!
Chasam Sofer in Toras Moshe gives a bit of a different reason for this. The
nations will see all of Bnei Yisrael gathering in one small city, and yet somehow
everyone was able to fit and no one thought the area is too small and tight for
them to be there. They will start thinking to themselves:
